The other day, this thread was posted on Jalopnik:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
As someone who has literally “been there, done that”, I noticed there was a ton of misinformation in this thread:
1. His car was black market, not grey market. A grey market car is a car that was never sold here but was imported legally.
2. There is no exemption for “track cars” or “off-road use”. It doesn’t matter how you intend to use the vehicle. If you are a US citizen and you want to permanently import this car it has to either conform to (or be exempt from, @21 and 25 years respectively) EPA and NHTSA/DOT regulations. The only exception is you can import a RACE CAR. The definition of race car is not “I installed a roll cage for TRACK DAY BRO!!1". A race car for this purpose has to be one made by the original manufacturer (i.e. Nissan/Nismo) as a race car for competition and that has no features which would allow it to be used on the road. You also have to show documentation from the manufacturer proving it is a race car for competition use. So, you can import an actual N1-spec GT-R that was used for racing, but you cannot import any GT-R that was available to the public even if you completely strip it out for TRACK DAY BRO
3. The VIN and insurance are mostly irrelevant. A properly imported 25 year old car will still have its original Japanese VIN, which is nine to twelve digits. Changing this to a US-format VIN would be a felony. As for the insurance, I have insurance through Farmers with the JDM VIN and the car listed as a Nissan Skyline. They will indeed insure them without much of a hassle, but if your car isn’t here legally the insurance policy is void. They will deny any claims related to it.
Unfortunately, I can’t comment on the main Jalopnik website for some reason so I couldn’t post this there.

I’m really hoping, and trusting, that the majority of OPPO knows all of this. It comes up monthly...or whenever Dsscats posts a Skyline picture, whichever comes first.

Lol I don’t think he wants them crushed I think he just hates people who buy illegally imported ones because he knows they’ll get caught and crushed. That basically means one less good GTR on the market when the exemption goes into effect.

As someone who is on the government side of this issue, you are right.

even if the car become legal, it will still be crushed because it was imported BEFORE they became legal.
like FFS, if you want one tht bad, buy some random tiny house in the middle of butt-fuck no where canada, get a canadian set of plates, and your done
(R34s have been legal year for a few years now. huzzah 15 year inport rules and not 25)

If you have a Canadian driver’s license, insurance, and plates, this is the way to go. However, you do need to drive the car back to Canada once per year as it would be entered as a temporary import.

let me tell you this: all that is WAY cheaper then getting the car crushed and then being on a FBI watch list for importing illegal goods.

You don’t get in trouble with the FBI. You get in trouble with ICE and CBP.
You know what’s even cheaper, though? Skip that bloated R33 and buy a R32. No ski-home necessary.

Meaning I work for the government. And while I have discovered and seized black market vehicles, I have also helped many more people with legal importations of vehicles.
And I don’t agree with stupid vehicle importation laws, but I’m just a peon and I don’t make the rules.

I was defending you, Peter is saying you WANT the cars to get crushed and I said you don’t. I can see how that assumption can be made by Peter because in some of your previous posts you get pretty annoyed at people who are bringing these illegal cars in.
I made the assumption that you don’t hate the cars but that you hate people illegally importing.
